PFAS in New England
The Toxic Environment: The Role of Primary Care - presented with Ardis Olson at the 44th Annual NNE CO-OP PCBRN Meeting
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Guidance for New Hampshire Clinicians was created in cooperation with NH DHHS and launched in June 2023.
A team of undergraduate interns, supervised by Dr. Romano, worked in cooperation with the Community Outreach Core of the Dartmouth Superfund Program, to create a factsheet about per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) along with New Hampshire (NH) stakeholders, including government representatives, advocacy organizations (Testing for Pease, and Merrimack Citizens for Clean Water), and NH state agencies (NH DES and NH DHHS). Members of the Romano Lab continue to collaborate with this group of stakeholders and others to create educational materials for community leaders and members in NH.
Dr. Romano also leads a multi-PI project with Dr. Celia Chen investigating PFAS concentrations in marine-sourced seafood from the New England region and assessing consumer fish consumption patterns in NH (R21 ES032187). These data will be used to inform risk assessment activities intended to support efforts to set more stringent surface water standards for PFAS in NH.
Environmental Health Guide & Trainings
Led by the New Hampshire APPLETREE Program, a team from Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth Health Cancer Center participated in the development of the NH Environmental Health Resource Guide and three related trainings to support local leaders as they respond to community environmental health concerns. Several members of the Romano Lab participated in this work.
Training videos and resources have been added to the Environmental Health Program website in a section titled, ‘Reducing Chemical Exposures in Your Daily Life’ representing the culmination of a highly productive collaboration between Dartmouth and NH DES.
